Download: Custom Photoshop Brushes, Series 20 20 skin texture brushes for Adobe Photoshop By Dave Nagel Last week we started a new series of custom brushes for Adobe Photoshop focusing on the creation of textures for use in 3D imagery, kicking it off with several brushes designed to simulate the look of body hair. This week we extend that collection with 20 new texture brushes, this time covering skin textures.

The brushes
Our collection this week (Nagel Series 20) includes 20 brushes for generating a variety of skin textures--from somewhat smooth skin to freckles, pock marks and blemishes. The collection is fairly large, consisting of some pretty complex elements that allow you to build up skin textures rather than simply applying them as you might a pattern overlay. This allows for much more customization, especially when you're painting on UV maps.

The following examples were all created using several different colors and blending modes. All were built up from a deep blue base and a secondary deep red layer, then painted over with lighter skin tones. Details were then strengthened using color and linear dodges in the brushes and well as color and linear burns. (For smoother skins, of course, you wouldn't want to use harsh blending modes like these. But you can tone down the results after painting the skin texture by simply adjusting brightness and contrast. Feel free to drop me a line in our Adobe Photoshop forum if you'd like further instructions.)

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
